KARLSRUHE Kaserne - GERSZEWSKI BARRACKS - 1970 1972
501st. Ord. 84th. Battalion - TASCOM.
Here they are Bruce, use any or all of then you like. The black and white photos
were taken and developed by myself in the Gerszewski Photo lab. Gerszewski
Website link button is at the bottom of the page.
I was prompted by an internet site that is dedicated to Gerszewski in Karlsruhe
West Germany to provide any photos I may have taken while stationed there. The
Chapel is where I worked as a 71M20 Chaplains Assistant, handling office affairs
and services for both the Protestants and Catholics. (One of my first -
Multi-tasking positions) Other photos are of Berchtesgaden in the Alps where I
attended a religious retreat. This Castle is just below Hitler's Tea House and
is now called the General Walker Hotel. I have no idea why Bob took these photos
of me with a pipe, I never did buy any pipe tobacco. Many Photos I had are now
lost do to three floods that I managed to survive back in the early 90's. WW II
left some reminders for those of us who followed later in 1970. Does anyone else
remember the bullet holes in the exterior and interior of the the Billets we
worked and lived in? I was also stationed at Miesau Army Depot, Kaiserslautern.
Click on a thumbnail to enlarge the picture. That is one ugly sport jacket I'm
wearing in the photo's. Whatever could have caused me to buy such a thing,
I'll never know? Memories are a good thing. If nothing else, we can learn from
them. PS: If anyone has an interest of the Wine Vineyards in Baden Baden, let me
know and I will post them. Enjoy, G. Patrick Riley

501st. Ord. 84th. Battalion Front of Gerszewski Chapel. Back of Gewszewski Chapel where my office was. Sunday Morning Service. I would open the doors early as some soldiers like to come early and pray. German Luthern Church Steeple. Self near a Billets at Gerszewsi. Gerszewski, self standing in front of a main gate. I may have been on my way to a resterant in town that I often ate at on Saturdays. Ray Isabel and I shared a room for a short time. Ray had a heart attack one night and I managed to help him. He left the Army soon after. Retreat at Berchtesgaden. Middle row far left, can't miss the 70's plaid jacket. 01 Retreat at Berchtesgaden. Yep you guessed it, same ugly jacket with back to the Baby Grand piano. 02 Retreat at Berchtesgaden. 6th. row back far right plaid sport coat. 03 Had to go. Never did use the sticker and it still has it's backing.
I wish I had stayed in the Military and think I would have had I not become ill during basic training. I passed through these doors many times and never regretted it once. Considering the few things I've accomplished in my life time, I think I could have made a difference. Well, just a typical 17 year old. Too bad I didn't make my fortune when I knew everything about nothing. Yes, I would ring the bell every Sunday. Ray had been in Korea, Vietnam and was very interesting to talk with. He would tell of Korea and how the bombs would explode all around him at times. He never spoke of Vietnam and so I never brought up the question. I don't remember which Ord. he was with prior to arriving at the 501st.
